Workshop on Migrants, Migration and Development in the Greater Mekong Subregion
In the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), numerous development projects, including road construction, hydropower projects, and economic zones along the border, have been implemented in over the past two decades. While migration in the GMS is not an old phenomenon, these development projects have had new impacts on migration in the GMS, including the creation of new migration flows. Back in 2008, MMN saw that the impacts of development policies on the GMS had not yet been substantially studied and considered it important to initiate this discussion.
Between 16-17 July 2008, MMN therefore organised a workshop on Migrants, Migration and Development in the Greater Mekong Subregion with the following objectives: 1) to help develop the capacity of MMN members in analysing and understanding the issues of development and migration in the GMS; 2) to strengthen the subregional response to development approaches; and 3) to develop a collective perspective concerning migration and development in the GMS.
