Migrant Health Snakes and Ladders: MMN Activity @ ICAAP

MMN attended the 11th International Conference on HIV/AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, Bangkok, Thailand from 18 to 22 November 2013. Over 3,000 participants attended ICAAP, and as a part of series of networking events, MMN on 21 November organised a participatory activity entitled “Migrant Health Snakes and Ladders”, through which participants were to experience what enables or prevents migrants to/from accessing health care. 35 people participated in the activity including migrant workers, migrant advocates, civil society representatives, researchers and other delegates to ICAAP.

Through playing the game, participants discussed various barriers for migrants to access health care. Ways to overcome these obstacles were discussed after the game and included mobilizing in the workplace to negotiate better working conditions, forming networks to provide translation services and peer support, and ensuring that all migrant workers have health insurance and access to affordable treatment.

ICAAP concluded on 22 November 2013.
