Migrant Cassava Workers: Global Cassava Supply Chains and Migrant Labour in Thailand [Video]

With the aim to raise attention to the situation of migrant workers in the agriculture sector in Thailand, MMN shot a video in Mae Sot District in July 2022 with a special focus on cassava plantation workers.
Cassava is the third-largest source of food carbohydrates in the tropics, after rice and maize. It is also an essential ingredient in a wide range of products including bio-fuel, animal feed, and medicines. As the world’s largest exporter of cassava, Thailand sends its crop across the world, including to China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the United States.
Thailand’s agriculture sector has long relied on the labour of migrant workers from neighbouring countries, an estimated 4 million migrant workers, mainly from Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos, live and work in Thailand.
Join us on our visit to a cassava plantation in Mae Sot, and hear from migrant workers who will share with us some of the challenges they face in their work and daily life.
