VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT: Advocacy and Building Capacity Officer

The Mekong Migration Network (MMN) in coordination with the Foundation for Migrants from the Mekong Neighbourhood (MMN Foundation) is looking for a full-time Advocacy and Building Capacity (ABC) Officer. The successful applicant will be based at the MMN Secretariat office in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The position requires the successful applicant to frequently travel within Thailand as well as within the Mekong region. There is no special support (i.e. support for relocation costs, etc.) for people applying for this position from overseas or other provinces. This initial contract is for one year which may be renewable depending on job performance and funding availability.

Overview of the Mekong Migration Network

MMN is a sub-regional network of civil society organizations and research institutes working on migration issues in Mekong countries. MMN’s joint areas of work include advocacy, information monitoring, research, capacity building and networking. Please see www.mekongmigration.org for more information about MMN.

Roles and responsibilities:

General
To work as part of the MMN Secretariat team to help strengthen the MMN as a sub-regional network promoting the rights of migrant workers in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS)

Specific

  1. Advocacy

*Work as a member of the MMN Secretariat team in carrying out advocacy work. This may include, but not limited to, carrying out background research, assisting in drafting statements and other relevant documents, editing and laying them out, circulating and promoting the final documents effectively.

*Make effective use of visual materials such as poster, videos etc to enhance the effectiveness of MMN advocacy.

*Make effective use of MMN webpage and social media to broaden the impact of MMN join advocacy.

*Regularly update the MMN media contact list so to enable MMN to carry out advocacy work promptly when needed.

*Closely monitor the media coverage when MMN releases a statement, launches a report, or organize activities. Collate such media coverage and promptly inform other members of the MMN Secretariat, MMN Steering Committee and MMN members of the media coverage.

  1. Capacity Building 

*Assist project coordinators in implementation of MMN capacity building activities for migrants’ rights advocates/civil society organisations (CSOs) in the Mekong. These activities may take forms of sub-regional training programs, workshops, exchange visits among others.

*Assist in developing handbooks for CSOs and training modules.

*Actively communicate with MMN members and partners to discuss types of capacity building that are strategic and timely. Follow up with members regarding the use of knowledge gained from the capacity building activities in order to assess the impact.

  1. Coordination and management of MMN membership matters, partnerships, and contacts

*Coordinate the MMN secretariat’s communication with the MMN members regarding their membership matters, especially relating to members’ membership confirmation processes.

*Regularly update MMN members’ contacts and membership statuses to ensure smooth communication with members.

*Manage MMN list serves.

  1. Translation

*Translate materials between relevant Mekong language and English when necessary

*Provide relevant Mekong language-English interpretation in MMN meetings and training programs

  1. Other tasks

*As a member of the MMN Secretariat, assist tasks related to other MMN activities and the overall work of MMN. These may include, but are not limited to, assisting in the organization of meetings and various activities, representing MMN in various events, and being a part of MMN team to organize regional events, etc.

S/he will work as a part of the small multi-cultural team and report directly to the Regional Coordinator. As a sub-regional network, the job involves frequent travel. 

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

*Relevant degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field, such as development studies, migration studies, gender studies, international relations or law;

*Fluency and strong writing skills in English and Burmese, Vietnamese or Khmer

*Strong public speaking skills in English and Burmese, Vietnamese or Khmer

*Strong commitment to and understanding of migration issues in Mekong countries

*Good understanding on country and sub-regional political, economic and social context in Mekong

*Ability to work independently and as part of a small team

*Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines

*Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

*Excellent attention to detail

*Proven computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel & PowerPoint)

*Commitment to MMN’s approach and values

*Ability to travel

Desirable

*Experience on developing training modules and/or handbooks for CSOs

*Experience of national and regional advocacy

*Experience working with social media (Twitter, Facebook etc.) for advocacy

*Skills to design poster, videos or other forms of visuals

*Skills to layout reports
