Surge Of Myanmar Migrants Into Thailand Comes With Grim Costs

SUMMARY: Since the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, a new wave of people is fleeing to Thailand to escape war, conscription, and economic collapse. Despite efforts by both Myanmar’s junta and Thai authorities to stop this, hundreds of thousands cross the 2,400 km border, often through remote jungle areas. Increased travel restrictions and closed checkpoints push migrants to take riskier routes, facing dangers like accidents, exploitation, and disease. Migrants often pay up to 30,000 Thai baht (USD $900) to make the dangerous journey, sometimes pawning land or homes to afford it.
